Cone Shell
Artist: Anne Neil & Steve Tepper
Year of Work: 2005
Location: 1 Preston Street, Como - Melville Parade
Description: Since settlement, this beautiful river location at Como has been a most popular place to spend leisure and free time. It was a popular holiday destination early last century, particularly for those from the bush - the river and sand being a great attraction. This leads us to the idea of using shells collected along the beach as a source of inspiration – a reference to holidays and playing in the sand.

Year of Work: 1996
Location: Traffic island at intersection of St Georges Terrace and Mount Street, Perth

These seven kangaroo silhouettes are captured in mid-flight, carrying briefcases. The concept of the artwork is derived from people working on the Terrace and returning home. The kangaroos, once abundant in the area, are seen racing back to King’s Park after a hard day at work. The briefcases draw attention to contemporary life on the Terrace and brings a touch of humour to Perth’s premier business avenue.

Holding a Box Brownie camera and a handful of photographic plates, the Unidentified Photographer beckons the public to look inside his camera. Inside the Gladstone bag are bronze models of various trade tools of the professionals who once worked on the Terrace.

Front Inscription
In the late nineteenth century the gardens flourished.
On 24 November, 1898, the West Australian newspaper described the grounds as having "Well kept lawns, covered with soft spongy sward tempt the visitor to laze luxuriously on the couch spread so invitingly , while around him on every side are trim, well-kept beds of flowers, divine is shape, brilliant in bloom, delicious in perfume, and varying the more generally known forms with many that are rare and equally beautiful. Well laid out paths wind in and about the trees and lawns, and everywhere care, intelligence, skill and a remarkable capability for extracting every possible advantage out of a small means are apparent."
In 2006, the City of Perth Art Foundation commissioned artist Anne Neill, in collaboration with landscape architects Blackwell & Associates and heritage consultant Barbara Dundas to design an artwork for this entry to Stirling Gardens.
This sculpture `Memory Markers` was inspired by the early recording of memories about Stirling Gardens. The shapes are based on the familiar ink dipping nib which expresses the esssence of the Victorian Era on which the original formal planting patterns were based
