The Magic Tree
Artist: Coral Lowry
Year of Work: 2006
Location: Windsor Park, South Perth - Near Heritage House
Description: “The idea behind the ‘Magic Tree’ was that it had been planted in the Park and, over time, morphed into a variety of animals,” she said. “This is no ordinary tree, as stemming from the tail-like trunk are leaves that certainly require a closer look, due to the different part of various animals that can be seen within each leaf. “I wanted the Tree to be a guessing game where children could try and work out the different types and parts of the animals embodied in it.”

Once the lightning has struck the dry land, the fire begins its journey of life across the country. Starting a cleansing process, the fire destroys old growth and opens up to new vegetation, like seeds plants and grasses. The Aboriginal people would use the fire to hunt and collect small game. The season changes, bringing storm clouds rolling in from the distance. Heavy rains start the healing process by flooding the land. Billabongs, lakes and rivers are filled, bringing new grasses and plants back to the areas and attracting the kangaroos and emus and other small game. The land has changed, and is full of spirit and food, colour. The season and land slowly changes once again. The animals and all the seeds from the plants are disappearing. A Quiet Walk
Artist: Rick Vermey
Year of Work: 2020
Location: Mindeerup, South Perth - Electrical substation to east of Mindeerup
Description: Inspiration for this artwork comes from the experience of quietly walking alone in native bushland. Wandering through the bush, things have a way of slipping in and out of focus, flitting between shadow and light, as first this plant and then that plant leap to the centre of vision. A collage of small momentary details is imprinted in the mind. Such tiny details as the shape of a leaf, the silhouette made by a cluster of overlapping branches or the brazen colour and form of a unique flower each capture our attention in turn, standing out in vivid relief, yet quickly receding in the shimmer.
